Construction of Residence Inn in North Phoenix Reaches Halfway Point

PHOENIX, Ariz. (January 24, 2008)…Mike Bontrager, president of the Southwest Business Unit of The Weitz Company, is pleased to announce that The Weitz Company has topped out the Residence Inn by Marriott located at the southeast corner of Mayo Boulevard and 56th Street, on the Phoenix campus of Mayo Clinic. The "topping out" of a building during the construction process celebrates a milestone in the construction of the building and recognizes the accomplishment of the construction workers.

European and Asian in origin, the practice of topping out was brought to America by immigrants who became the country’s contractors and steelworkers. Today, it is a celebration by workers and their guests of the placement of the topmost member of a structure.

The new Residence Inn will be developed and owned by the Finvarb Group and Marriott International will manage the property. The rest of the project team includes: Eller Group- owner’s representative/project manager, The Weitz Company-general contractor; Dennis D. Smith- architect; Jacki Arena Interiors Inc,-interior designer; and Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc.-civil engineer.

The $24 million hotel follows a long-standing tradition of Marriott Hotels near hospital campuses for the convenience of patients and their families. It will stand six-stories high and will provide 208 rooms over 130,000 square feet. Completion is expected to be winter 2008.
