PROJECT PARTNERS COMPLETE DENVER TECH CENTER LANDMARK
Art feature signifies the area’s growth and recognizes key developer’s retirement

DENVER, Colo – January 7, 2009 – The Weitz Company, a premier national contractor who has been working in Colorado for more than 53 years, announced today the completion of the Denver Technological Center’s (DTC) newest landmark: an identity art feature adjacent to and east of I-25, south of Belleview Avenue.  The project was the vision of the Goldsmith Metropolitan District and many project partners made that vision a reality.  Designed by Barber Architecture, landscape planned by CIVITAS, fabricated by Orna Metals, erected by Juno Metals, engineered by Martin and Martin and managed by The Weitz Company, the structure stands at 100 feet tall and 22 feet wide.

“In designing a symbol for the DTC, it was important to create a dynamic structure that evokes technology and looks to the future,” said Michael Barber, design principal of Barber Architecture.  “The audience for this landmark is the passing motorist. It had to be big, bold and engaging for the viewer.”

According to Tony Turner of Orna Metals, the art feature weighs 55,000 pounds and incorporates 1,600 linear feet of steel, or more than a 1/4 of a mile of pipe if the steel was placed end-to-end.  To ensure attention to detail, the team welded only six beams a day to complete the first 50 feet of the landmark. The new area and its art feature will serve to identify the DTC.

“This landmark is a symbol of the role the Tech Center has played in Denver’s business success,” said Bill Hornaday, president of The Weitz Company Rocky Mountain Region.”  “Weitz has had the pleasure of building several other Tech Center landmarks throughout the past 50 years, and we look forward to 50 more years.”

The Metro District Board elected to name the park "Raymond A. Bullock Park" in honor of their long-time Chairman, and former Executive Vice President of DTC/Meridian.

Bullock, who retired from active management when the DTC/Meridian office parks were acquired by Shea Properties in 2006, was employed with the DTC for more than 25 years and was instrumental in many aspects of its development.  Mr. Bullock has also served as Chair of the DTC Architectural Control Committee for many years and continues in that capacity today.

“I am flattered by the recognition and honored to be named, along with many of the individuals who participated in making DTC what it has become,” said Bullock.

The park includes a unique plaque on the base of the art feature recognizing both the Metro District and Architectural Control Committee members, as well as numerous individuals who have participated in the development of the DTC since its inception in the early 1960’s.
